The first golf course in Cleveland, Ohio was created in 1895. Samuel Mather, a prominent Cleveland industrialist, introduced the game to the city after playing at St. Andrews Club in New Jersey earlier that year. Mather organized the Cleveland Golf Club, which opened its grounds on July 13, 1895, in Glenville. The club featured a short nine-hole course laid out on land adjacent to The Country Club's clubhouse. This marked the beginning of golf in Cleveland, with the sport quickly gaining popularity among the city's social and business elite.
